For a first-time look, the September 12 Nintendo Direct trailer for Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave was incredibly insightful. With just one trailer, we already have a decent amount of information about the game's characters, story, and gameplay.

A direct follow-up to Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave borrows a lot of ideas from its predecessor. That doesn't mean that the gameplay is a 1:1 copy, however. Blaze Arts look to be the new, defining mechanic of Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave. Although we've seen very little of the mechanic up to this point, the first trailer tells us more than you would think.

Blaze Arts Add More Depth Out Of Combat

Blaze Arts are a new gameplay mechanic that will be introduced in Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave. Conceptually, the mechanic is most similar to the Combat Arts in Fire Emblem: Shadows of Valentia, where players had to pay a certain HP Cost to use an art. Blaze Arts, likewise, have an HP Cost, though it seems like the cost may be percentage-based rather than a fixed number. This would make the most sense for game balance, considering some of the art abilities we've seen.

At the moment, we know the specifics behind two Blaze Arts exactly. Here are the two seen in the first trailer:

Blaze Arts are a unique mechanic in that they play more of a support role. From what we can tell, their utility comes from outside of combat. For example, in the trailer, we see Dietrich using Moving Shadow to warp a few spaces ahead. The art specifically allows him to use other actions after warping, including Attack, but combat isn't forced upon him. Leda also uses her Blaze Art in isolation.

The Blaze Gauge (Or Whatever Its Official Name Is)

Those with a keen eye may have noticed that a gauge on the top left increases, or can increase, when a Blaze Art is used. This appears to be an important aspect of the mechanic, as some Blaze Arts actually require the gauge to be at a certain level. Leda's Song of Beasts, for example, requires the gauge to be at least half full.

Building up the Blaze gauge will be crucial for gaining access to a unit's full set of Blaze Arts, but relying too heavily on the mechanic will most likely burn you. Units have a "Manage Gauge" option, which suggests a need to be mindful of the gauge's charge level.

All signs point to Blaze Arts being a fundamental, new mechanic in Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave. With all playable characters having access to them, navigating through maps will likely feel completely different. It's still early, but the mechanic definitely seems like a great addition. More character uniqueness in Fire Emblem is never a bad thing, and these arts open the door to a lot more variety in strategy.
