Stealth games often invoke a fairly grounded image, but Hoomanz! proves that a cuter take on the genre can totally work. From the get-go, Hoomanz! proudly embraces its cozy, family-friendly appeal. It’s more of a casual experience, and you can really feel that as you play through the game.
Hoomanz! doesn’t exactly promise complex stealth mechanics, but the gameplay definitely isn’t simple. Or at least, it doesn’t need to be treated that way. Players are granted a significant amount of freedom, with there being multiple different ways to successfully scare off every Hooman. The Hoomanz! demo is very promising.
One of the most common critiques of the stealth genre is its overdependence on making players wait. For the most part, it’s something inescapable in design. Any game centered around avoiding detection naturally implies that you’re at the risk of being caught. Every game, though, has its own way of handling that surveillance.
Hoomanz! is relatively lenient when it comes to its detection systems. The game actually wants players to get the attention of Hoomanz all the time, so it makes sense that being seen directly isn’t too punishing. You could say that this hurts the game’s immersion levels, but it fits the more casual experience that Hoomanz! goes for. You can certainly still get caught, but running away is super viable. The forgiving nature of Hoomanz! is very welcome, because it enables you to actually try out different strategies.
Hoomanz! makes good use of its overall fast pace by actually taking advantage of players' ability to lure enemies toward them. The two levels in the demo showcase that the design of the maps can absolutely be used to gain the upper hand. That’s a positive sign to see so early on. I’m looking forward to seeing just how complex the puzzles can get.
Cute stealth games can totally work. Just because they target a more family-friendly audience doesn’t mean that they need to be aggressively basic. Hoomanz! prioritizes fun above all else, and that’s a great choice for the game. It just so happens to be really cute, too, which definitely helps bring in extra intrigue. Who can resist that adorable little fox that wants to so desperately scare people away?
