For a while, we’ve known that a DLC expansion has been imminent for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, but now some details about the DLC have actually been unveiled. Compared to previous Pokémon expansions, Mega Dimensions looks to be the boldest yet. It’s not only adding to the Legends: Z-A experience, but it is also defying long-standing traditions. An exciting new chapter to Lumiose’s story awaits.
Considering the name of the expansion, it’s no surprise that Mega Dimensions will be adding to the current roster of Mega Evolutions. The first trailer of the DLC showed off two new Megas, Mega Baxcalibur and Mega Chimecho, and there is a lot more to come. While there hasn’t been an official statement to fully confirm this, leaks for Pokémon Legends: Z-A suggest that we will be getting almost 20 brand-new Mega Evolutions in total, including the ones we have seen so far.
For the most part, Mega Dimensions will prioritize giving Mega Evolutions to Pokémon that are returning in the DLC. Much like in the previous Pokémon expansions, a whole new swath of Pokémon will be made available in all the added locations. Some fun names from all across the different generations will be getting some love. Some Pokémon who already have a Mega Evo are also expected to get some extra attention. Korrina’s presence in the DLC is certainly a hint that there are Mega Evolution surprises in store for players.
Since the days of Pokémon Red and Blue, level 100 has always been the level cap in any major Pokémon game. That’s now changing with Mega Dimensions, as the first main trailer made a point to highlight the levels going beyond 100. It’s very likely that the changed level cap will only apply to the DLC areas, but we can’t say that for sure.
The Pokémon Company has explicitly stated that the DLC will directly follow the main story of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, so there’s likely an expectation that players will have Pokémon at or approaching level 100. That may be why they’ve decided to push the cap. Still, leveling up in Pokémon Legends: Z-A doesn’t exactly feel easy, so I’m curious to see how that will be balanced.
To enter Hyperspace Lumiose, players will have to rely on Ansha and Hoopa. Hoopa will unsurprisingly be key to all the dimension hopping in the DLC, simply demanding donuts in return. Providing Ansha with different sorts of berries so that she can bake some donuts will be key to exploring Hyperspace thoroughly.
The different donuts not only provide varying amounts of energy for Hoopa to use — calorie burning being implemented as a timer is brilliant, by the way — but they also seem to grant access to different Hyperspace Wild Zones. 'Better quality' donuts also appear to increase the level of Pokémon available. They are 100% confirmed to lengthen the survey time in Hyperspace, as well.
Much has been said about Mega Dimensions potentially playing like a roguelike, but there isn’t much evidence for that. If anything, Hyperspace survey trips seem to directly resemble the Z-A Royale. A select number of mission points need to be accumulated before you can gain access to what looks like a survey file. Making donuts and completing said missions in Hyperspace will likely be the main gameplay loop. Maybe there’s some randomization involved, but, considering that players will be able to use their old party, Mega Dimensions probably won’t resemble a roguelike much at all.
