Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Goes Beyond With New Psychic Powers

Samus Aran will gain access to psychic powers in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.

Not much was expected out of the last Nintendo Direct of the Nintendo Switch era, so a new look at Metroid Prime 4: Beyond was definitely a pleasant surprise. Nintendo wasn't all that shy with the details this time around, revealing Metroid Prime 4's new core gameplay element: psychic abilities. Innovation is an expectation for Nintendo, and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is set to offer a unique experience within the franchise.

Planet Viewros, The Home Of Psychics

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond takes place on Planet Viewros, a mysterious planet that Samus was unexpectedly transported to. As tends to be the case in most Metroid games, Viewros is filled to the brim with hostile alien life. It's not all bad, though, as the planet also seems to be the home of a psychically-gifted alien race. And to them, Samus serves a greater purpose. She is the Chosen One.

An unknown race of psychic aliens in Planet Viewros are probably responsible for both bringing Samus to the planet and granting her new psychic abilities.

Plenty Of Psychic Abilities In Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

Samus is eventually granted psychic abilities of her own in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, allowing her to take on the world around her in completely new ways. Her primary power is that of telekinesis, which she can use to operate mechanisms from afar. Samus is also capable of using her abilities offensively, redirecting the trajectory of her beams using just her mind. In gameplay, that translates to taking control of the beam after it has been fired.

The new psychic abilities in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond give Samus the power of telekinesis. She can use it to move objects from afar, including her own beams.

Psychic powers are a fun twist on Metroid's traditional formula. It isn't exactly an elegant evolution of the series' usual gameplay, but it definitely has given the developers more room to get creative. Everything will surely make a little more sense once Metroid Prime 4: Beyond releases some time later in 2025.
