There is a lot of excitement surrounding Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, but the matchmaking issues in the open beta test are glaring. It's bad. Finding an opponent can take minutes on end, with some players even reporting that it took hours for them to find a match. The developers at SNK have taken notice and have promised improvements of the system prior to the game's official release. A second City of the Wolves open beta test may even be hosted, in order to test their fixes.
If you've tried the Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves open beta test, chances are that you've noticed that it can take quite a while to find players to fight against. Don't worry, this has been a universal experience. Well, that's probably more worrisome, actually...
To be totally fair, SNK's response has been rather quick. Yasuyuki Oda, the producer of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, has publically apologized on X for the poor experience. Oda confirmed that the development team is hard at work trying to fix City of the Wolves' matchmaking and room search issues. Unfortunately, these specific issues are unlikely to be fixed before the end of the open beta test. As a result, SNK is thinking about offering a second open beta test down the line.
In all likelihood, SNK has already thought about hosting a second open beta test for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, even before they became privy to these connection issues. Open beta tests always make for great publicity. Players want nothing more than to actually play the game that they've been thinking about buying. SNK, especially, needs to win people's interest, as they don't have brand power on the level of Street Fighter or Tekken.
Practically-speaking, a second test would also give the City of the Wolves development team more information to react to. Just within 2 days, players have found problems with the startup screen, connecting gamepads, and the aforementioned matchmaking issues. Even game balance can be addressed, thanks to beta testing. All things considered, it is very probable that we see another Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves open beta test.
It is always good to see a development team that is receptive to the feedback of their players. It's an important quality for the success of a fighting game. Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves looks to be in good hands, but the matchmaking issues really do need fixing. The full game cannot come out with that still being a problem, unless SNK wants massive public backlash for it.
